Beach Culture Durban

Woah--Durban is very different! There's definitely a height contrast between the two cities...Durban is a skyscraper-filled, Western-looking city. We can see the Indian Ocean from our rooms. Don't know what else to say in 2 minutes--yikes time limit!

Museum mania

It's been surprisingly exhausting--an information and emotional overload! This has probably been the longest week in my life...in a good way, of course! Just getting used to everything...I'm surprised at the similarities and differences: everything seems to be gated, or fenced-loads of barbed wire, but not as hostile as you might think. I've tried some of the new food and it's been good--a lot of corn-based things including a dish that looks like bread crumbs which you dump a creamy buttermilk-like stuff onto. I think we've all been sleeping well aside from the occasional wierd dream, mostly because we're all pooped by the end of the day. There's alot of contrast here--even the museums vary in how technological they are (The Hector Museum was amazing! and the Apartheid Museum was very much like the Holocaust Memorial in Farm. Hills).
Time almost up in internet cafe!

In the news

Please know that we are in no danger of the xenophobia attacks. We are not near the violence that is taking place and we are not the type of group targeted in the attacks. Those being attacked are other Africans coming in and taking jobs of South Africans.

South Africa....

Well, we have made it to South Africa and we are busy learning from lectures and museums as well as just observing all of the people and places. It is a busy, but fun learning experience. It is hard to believe we have been here 3 days already!

Well we all made it to Pretoria. After resting on Sunday, we had our first day of class today, learning about the Pre-Colonial and Colonial History of South Africa in two classes this morning, separated by a tea break. After class we had lunch at the Transvaal Natural History Museum in the heart of Pretoria. I'll let others add more, Internet cafe time is ending soon.
